Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Radio drama has long been recognized as an effective tool for promoting behavior change, particularly in rural communities. By combining entertainment with education, radio drama captivates audiences while delivering impactful messages on health, education, and social issues. In Biu Local Government Area, Borno State, where traditional values and oral storytelling are deeply ingrained, radio drama serves as a culturally resonant medium for influencing behavior. Studies show that radio dramas can challenge harmful practices, promote positive behaviors, and foster community dialogue (Ali & Yusuf, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024). However, the success of these programs depends on factors such as content relevance, language use, and audience engagement. This study explores the effectiveness of radio drama in promoting behavior change in Biu LGA, highlighting its potential and limitations in addressing local challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the popularity of radio drama in Biu LGA, behavioral challenges such as poor health practices and social conflicts persist. While radio dramas are designed to educate and inspire change, their actual impact on audience behavior is not well-documented. Additionally, challenges such as limited access to radios and inconsistent programming may hinder their effectiveness. This study seeks to evaluate the role of radio drama in promoting behavior change in Biu LGA, providing insights into its impact and areas for improvement.
